Gardening in the South: Trees, Shrubs, & Lawns (Gardening in the South with Don Hastings)
Donald M., Jr Hastings,Don Hastings
Popular radio/TV personality and gardening expert Don Hastings has finally written the book his fans have been clamoring for. In fact, he's written not just one book, but three.
Trees, Shrubs and Lawns is the first volume of Don's new series, Gardening in the South with Don Hastings, which will provide a truly comprehensive and authoritative guide to gardening in the Southern states. The second and third volumes will cover vegetables, fruits, flowers, and other ornamental plants.
This first volume addresses the basic building blocks of the landscape — the trees, the shrubs, and the lawn. Everything you need to know to get started as a gardener is here, with easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions and literally hundreds of recommended shade trees, flowering trees, and shrubs of all kinds, including roses. You'll also learn how to install and maintani a healthy, attractive lawn — usually the largest as well as the most time-consuming part of the landscape.
Don Hastings approaches his subject with a rare combination of scientific integrity and a down-to-earth, readable style of writing. He shares personal anecdotes from his many years of gardening experience in the South and from his travels throughout the world — and even, occasionally, expresses what he freely admits are personal prejudices ("Please don't be upset if I tell you that I really do not like junipers.") The result is a book that is not only practical to use but also a pleasure to read.
Since the author assumes no prior knowledge on the part of the reader, the book is perfect for the novice gardener, the first-time homeowner, or the newcomer to the South. On the other hand, the extensive plant listing sections, the complete instructions for proper care of each plant, and the meticulous concern for correct nomenclature and technical validity will make it a valuable reference for veteran gardeners and horticulturists as well.
